In Praise of Lego

All hail the Lego bucket. The peace maker amongst all children no matter what gender, age or temperament. The common ground that will keep all kids entertained and quietly industrious for hours…

I had forgotten how brilliant Lego is until last weekend when we were invited to an in-store Harrods event where girls and boys sat round in a circle and got to meet a LEGO MASTER and play with Lego all morning. A Lego Master is basically someone who plays with lego all day as their job. Yes, this job exists. The kids seemed deeply impressed with this concept while i wondered where you could go career wise once you’d built a replica Taj Mahal and would your fingers be quite hurty for most of your life…

Anyway, the best thing about our morning playing with Lego was watching how immersed, excited and creative all the children became when they were sent off to make absolutely anything they wanted to out of piles of Lego that were poured onto 6 or so trestle tables. Children from around 4 yrs to 8 yrs were all enraptured. It was really inspiring to watch and also surprisingly fun to join in with. In fact, I might have got a tiny bit competitive.

Yes, Lego is immensely painful if you accidentally step on it and yes my daughter once threw a piece of it at a boy’s head in a fit of rage and drew blood (still trying to live that down – most out of character) but ultimately this is one toy cupboard stalwart that can’t be done without if you want a nice quiet life from time to time.
